In every school in Delaware, there are kids who want to read, but they’re stuck. Basic remediation helps many, but not all. That’s when schools call in the Reading Assist Intervention Corps from the Reading Assist Institute (RAI). Corps members work with struggling readers for 45 minutes a day, five days a week. RAI leverages state funding to fuel a private-public-nonprofit partnership with AmeriCorps in order to make highly specialized reading interventionists affordable to schools. The data shows it works. More schools are requesting corps members in their classrooms, and kids who once struggled to read alongside their peers are back in the classroom, reading to learn, not learning to read.
