Newark, Del — Mark A. Meister, executive director of the Medical Society of Delaware (MSD), has announced his pending retirement to the staff and the members of the organization. Meister has served in this capacity since joining MSD in April of 1989.

In making the announcement, Meister said “It has been an honor to represent the physicians of our great state for nearly three decades and an experience I’ll always cherish, having had the opportunity to work with so many wonderful people. It also has been humbling to be part of a professional society with such a rich history – one that has proudly represented Delaware physicians and the patients they serve for over 225 years.”

Meister plans to step down as MSD’s Executive Director in July 2017.

A succession planning and leadership transition team has been formed and an executive search firm engaged to assist in helping recruit Meister’s replacement. “Identifying a strong leader, who can continue Mark’s great work as a strong voice for the medical profession and tireless advocate for the Delaware’s physician community, while guiding MSD into the future, remains our primary focus,” said the Society’s President Prayus Tailor, MD.

During his tenure as Executive Director, Meister has led MSD through an ongoing process of dynamic evolution in response to Delaware’s incredibly complex and ever-changing health care environment, including: the formation of MedNet, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Medical Society of Delaware that provides contract management and practice support to over 900 physicians in our state; HealthHub, an entity specializing in providing health information technology (HIT) through a suite of products and services to the physician community; Voluntary Initiative Program (VIP), a safety net program for the uninsured that helps coordinate physician and referral services and resources for patients; and Delaware’s first-ever statewide patient centered medical home initiative.

In 2011, Meister was awarded the prestigious Medical Executive Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Medical Association. In 1999, he was given the President’s Award and in 2004 the Daniel A.

Alvarez, M.D. Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his work with the Medical Society of Delaware. Meister has also served on a number of state and community boards.
