#SupportDENonprofits: People’s Place

People’s Place took me in at a time I did not wish to live anymore.”

“I went into foster care at the age of 13.  When I was 12 my mother drove me from Maine to Delaware to live with my grandmother.  Soon after I moved in with my grandmother she died. I thought my life was over.  By the time I turned 16 I had been in 25 different foster care homes.”

“I married my high school sweetheart.  We grew up in the same town, went to the same church, and we both had wonderful loving parents. I’m not sure when the abuse started or why but I feel like prisoner and am scared of doing something wrong all the time.”

Unfortunately, these are just a few of the stories we hear daily.  The circumstances may be different but sadly they are also much the same.  There are many individuals and families that are searching for the support they need to overcome their current situation and we are here to help.

Last year People’s Place served close to 8,000 Delawareans in desperate and similar situations.  Since 1972 we have been committed to upholding our mission to “help people find their path to growth and independence”.  People’s Place offers ten programs throughout the state which include; mental health and domestic violence counseling, emergency domestic violence shelter and a 24/7 hotline, family visitation centers, an emergency homeless shelter, veterans outreach,  foster care home for girls, an independent living foster care program, and mediation services.

“Thank you for all you have done for me and my children. You changed the course of my life by helping me see I am worthy of healthy love.  I will never forget what you have done for me and my family.  You gave me (us) a future.”

“I believe it is imperative to have services such as what is offered at People’s Place.  For me personally these services have changed my life for the better in so many ways.  Thank you to all of the staff at People’s Place!”

Making a difference in the lives of others is what we do.

Our empathetic and compassionate staff is dedicated to working with individuals and families with respect and understanding.  People’s Place clients who enter any of our ten programs are able to then follow a continuum of care that allows them to find their own path to growth and independence.  We assist the people of our communities by providing high-quality services that promote:  dignity, empowerment, independence, safety, self-esteem, and self-sufficiency.

Our goal is to continue providing these critical services to our vulnerable neighbors.  We are thankful for the generous support of our donors who help supplement program funding and for our elected officials that understand the importance of nonprofit work in Delaware.
